Want to slow the affects of ageing?

Easy! Restrict your calories.

A new study exploring the effects of calorie restrictions on humans has discovered that cutting back on calories can lessen the effects of ageing as well as fight age-related disease.

New research analysing the effects of calorie restriction on the human body found that consistently limiting calories can slow the metabolism, and lower both the effects of ageing and the risk of age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

The study, published in journal Cell Metabolism, involved a calorie restriction trial of non-obese people. 53 healthy men and women between 21 and 50 years of age cut calories by 15% over two years. Each calorie reduction was calculated individually using the ratio of isotopes absorbed by the participants’ tissues and molecules over 2 weeks.

“Restricting calories can slow your basal metabolism, and if by-products of metabolism accelerate ageing processes, calorie restriction sustained over several years may help to decrease risk for chronic disease and prolong life,” says Leanne M. Redman, lead author and associate professor of Clinical Sciences at Pennington Biomedical Research in Baton Rouge.

Calorie restriction decreased systemic oxidative stress, which is connected to age-related neurological conditions like Parkinson’s, the researchers discovered. “We found that even people who are already healthy and lean may benefit from a calorie restriction regimen,” Redman adds.
